Awakenings: An Anthology of New Writing
Following the success of our writing retreats and courses in SW France and Yorkshire, we are delighted to announce that we are open for submissions of new work to be published in our first anthology ‘Awakenings’ in autumn 2019.
We are looking for the best in short fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry, on any theme and in any style.
We are offering cash prizes or generous retreat and course bursaries for prize-winners. Every entrant selected for inclusion in the Anthology is awarded a 10% bursary on an Awakening The Writer Within retreat or course in 2020.
We are seeking Fiction, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, Memoir or Life Story for this anthology. We regret that we are unable to accept Scripts or Screenplays.
A First Prize of £200, Second Prize of £100, and Third Prize of £50 will be awarded. Alternative prizes of bursaries for retreat or course tuition are First Prize £250 (which is a full bursary on non-residential fees), £125 (50% bursary on non-residential fees) and £75 (30% bursary on non-residential fees). Bursary prizes must be taken in 2020. Winners have the choice of a cash or bursary prize.
Please submit your work in accordance with the following guidelines:
Fiction, including Flash Fiction up to 3000 words maximum.
Creative Non-fiction, Memoir, Life Story, up to 3000 words maximum.
Poetry in any form up to 100 lines per submission, not including titles and line breaks. You may submit a single poem or group of poems.
Multiple entries are welcome, but a separate fee is payable for each submission (i.e. 3000 words of fiction and 100 lines of poetry counts as two entries)

Closing date for Submissions: 30th June 2019
Publication Date: October/November 2019
£5 per single entry, £10 (2 x £5) for three entries. (Four entries would be £15 and six entries £20)
Participants of any ATWW course or those booking for 2018 (deposit paid) are eligible for one free entry, so would pay £5 for two entries, £10 for four entries, £15 for six entries.
It is acceptable to submit in multiple categories,(e.g. one poetry, one fiction, one non-fiction entry)
The chosen submissions will appear in a new anthology to be published by Ings Press in October/November 2019.
Published writers will be eligible to claim a 10% discount on fees on a future ATWW course (non-residential course fee only, in either France or York in 2019 or 2020)
Please pay for your entry or entries first, using the Paypal button.
Then email your submission to us at
together with your Paypal Transaction ID or IDs (the long number).
Please attach your submission as a Microsoft Word Document using.doc or docx suffix only. If you use publishing formats that we can’t open, you will not be considered and we will be unable to refund your fee.
Please complete your submission by midnight on 30th June 2019. Work submitted after this time will not be considered.
We aim to publish the Awakenings Anthology by the 31st October 2019.
